Western Flickers 11th WASPA - Farewell Summer

February 26, 2017

Western Flickers held their first WASPA tournament over the weekend since the successful foray to Sydney for the Australian Grand Prix.

Despite a few last minute cancellations – including former UK #1 and World Cup finalist Kaspar Bennett – the event went ahead with a good turnout of 7 flickers in the Open category and 3 juniors.
With ample time and a good number of tables, the Open category was run as a single round robin league format. Each match was played with 2 x 15 minute halves.

The matches went mostly as per WASPA rankings with a few notable performances. Steve Wright was playing in his first WASPA tournament and he did superbly getting 2 draws and scoring a couple of beautiful goals. Simon Briffa started slowly off the blocks but came into form as the day wore on to finished strongly and snare 4th spot.

The day however clearly belonged to Australia’s top ranked WASPA player Benny Ng who was on smoking hot form. The WTF club president cruised to victory undefeated with 5 wins and a draw. Benji and Luke played out a thrilling last match to decide runner up spot. It finished a 3-3 draw but it wasn’t enough for Benji Batten as he needed the win. It meant that Luke Radziminski came out ahead by a single goal difference.

In the Junior category, there was a major upset with Harrison finally finishing ahead of Australian junior champion Benjamin Ng and his brother Alex to snare the title. It was a just reward for all the hard work and practice that Harrison has put in the past few months. Well done Harrison! The burgeoning rivalry between Benjamin and Harrison looks to be an exciting one to follow for years to come, ala Federer-Nadal in the tennis world.

Thanks to all who attended for helping to make it another extremely successful Western Flickers WASPA event. It was an awesome fun day of skill, banter, jokes and all round relaxed enjoyable environment. Kudos to everyone for playing with the WTF spirit!
Also importantly, all the proceeds from the event were dedicated to our Subbuteo mate Harley Ulrich from Sydney who is seriously ill and needed help with medical expenses. Thanks to everyone who donated.
