Asian Cup of Table Football Consolation Plate WASPA

Those players who were eliminated from the FISTF International Open at the Asian Cup of Table Football 2018 in Melbourne were invited to compete for the Consolation Plate on the afternoon of Saturday 20th January. This was the Northern Phoenix WASPA for January and saw 19 players enter.
Western Flickers’ President Benny Ng was unlucky to have been eliminated from the FISTIF Open in the Group of Death. He went into the WASPA as the favourite in the eyes of many.
The barrage saw Chris Thorn of Perth Subbuteo defeat Enzo Coco of Sydney TFC 1-0; Hideaki Wada (Japan) defeat Fauzi Rahman (Western Flickers) 1-0; and Arjuna Hanafi (Western Flickers) defeat Alan Kimber (Perth Subbuteo) 2-1.
In the round of 16 Benny Ng easily account for Perth’s Chris Thorn 4-1, whilst Adrian Grunbach (Sydney TFC) marked himself as a player to watch in this event with a 4-0 over Hideaki Wada, and Christos Garagounis (Northern Phoenix) had a comfortable 2-0 win over Arjuna Hanafi. The other games in this round were all tightly contested. Tony Credentino (Sydney TFC), Adrian Elmer (Parramatta) and Hugh Best (Perth) all defeated their opponents 1-0, whilst Steve Dettre (North Falcons) also won narrowly, 2-1. The final round of 16 clash saw Tomoyoshi Ikeya (Japan) overcome Anthony Madiona (Western Flickers) on penalties after a goalless draw.
The quarter finals saw the two most impressive winners of the previous round take on each other in a high scoring affair with Benny Ng prevailing 5-3 over Adrian Grunbach. Tony Credentino kept another clean sheet in his 2-0 victory over Christos Garagounis, whilst Adrian Elmer repeated his round of 16 scoreline in defeating Hugh Best 1-0. Steve Dettre was too good for Tomoyoshi Ikeya in the remaining quarter final, winning 5-0.
In the semi finals Adrian Elmer again won 1-0, this time against Steve Dettre, to earn the right to face Benny Ng in the final after Benny accounted for Tony Credentino 2-0.
The final pitted the player with the best attack (Benny Ng with 11 goals) against the player with the best defence (Adrian Elmer was yet to concede). In the end it was the attacking skills of Benny that prevailed as despite Adrian scoring one goal again for the fourth successive match, Benny put three past Adrian’s keeper to take out the game, and the WASPA Plate, 3-1.

New year Cup for Mark McCrossan

The Derry City Table Football Club ‘New Year Cup 2018’ took place on Monday. there was a smallish turnout this time of 8 players but there were many good games. Players were divided into two groups before the knock-out stage. Mark McCrossan defeated Martinog Bradley on shots in the final to claim his 4th WASPA title. Lawrence Watson and Brendan Rodgers made it to the semi-finals.

Big success at the Major of Rochefort

The players on Friday
On June 12 to 14, the first edition of the FISTF Major of Rochefort was not only a huge success in the official categories with 180 players and 30 teams taking part. Organizers had also given free time and space for running WASPA events.

Katrin Knezevic won the raffle and received some beers from organizer Titi Giaux
On Friday night, the game were like an ultimate training session for travellers coming from far away and several German players were taking part besides some Belgians. The games were played in a friendly and positive atmosphere and after the four sessions in Swiss system, Martin Antoine from the local club was the obvious winner with 4 wins.

The event was also about making new friends: Philippe Thys and Melanie Kronmüller
On Saturday, despite the man on the computer wanted to play the consolation rounds in direct knock-out, there were enough free tables to play in Swiss system. Dude to the large number of players wanting to enter, it was decided to play two groups. In group 1, everything was decided in the last session. While Antonis Vlachopoulos and John Zammit shared points in their game, Benoit Vanwissen defeated Jos Ceulemans to finish on top with 10 points.

In group 2, everything was also decided in the last session. The game between Stelio Tsangouris and Yves Peremans finished with a draw while Olivier Sagit defeated Michele Cerullo to finish on top with more goals scored than Tsangouris.

Decisive game on Friday between Yve Peremans and Martin Antoine
For the three winners, it was the first time they were grabbing honors in a WASPA event so it was nice to see new players being so happy (and sometimes very surprised) about their wins.

From the WASPA point of view, such events show a fantastic way to collaborate with FISTF and all players taking part were happy to have so many extre games besides the main event.

In Austria, the club of Royal 78 had a Christmas Cup on January 14. There was a very good field of 15 players. "Stefan defeated Alex in the final while Christian and Karl reached the top 4", commented the organizers.

Scotland was back in action on January 14 with five players meeting in Lettham. Players met each other twice and in the end Steve Bennett finished on top of the table with 22 points. Rob Conway was runner-up (19) while David Baxter (9), Andy Beskaby (9) and Dave Minty (0) were also taking part.

Players at the Sydney TFC tournament
Australia had some tournament in the last few weeks. We will soon come back on what happened before and during the Asian Cup but some other results are worth a mention. Sydney TFC had a tournament last week with a good field of 10 players. Robert Green defeated Daniele Lombardi to claim the honors. Tony Credentino and FISTF president Steve Dettre made it to the semi-finals.

A bit earlier, Subbuteo Parramatta also had a tournament with seven players taking part. Hermann Kruse and Paul Magee played the final and there was no winner (0-0) so organizers decided to share honors so that there were two winners. Adrian Elmer and Steve Dettre reached the semis.

The Northern Falcons had a nive evening of play to prepare the Asian Cup. Fabrizio Coco finished on top of a group of 5 while Steve Dettre was runner-up, Tony Credentino took the third place, John Palamara was 4th and Kostas Barbaris was 5th.

In Wales, the first Knighton promotional tournament took place last Sunday. Dan Nicholls finished on top of a groupe of four while Danny Bird was runner-up. Tom Taylor and Kenny Evans were the other players taking part.

The final

On January 13, 24 players celebrated the first anniversary of the Subbuteo space X77 in Kallithea with a WASPA tournament. This was the 32nd WASPA tournament organized by Flaming Flickers SC. There were many good and close games with the usual fair-play spirit and the winner was Yiorgos Karavas (Blades) after a penalty shoot-out against Alekos Apatzis (Flaming Flickers) in the final. Some great events in Wales

There is a lot of action going on in Wales for the moment. After a great tournament in Cardiff, three more events have been held recently.

First of all, London Road SC held a promotional event on January 13 with a small field of four players but some great games were played. Trevor Schott from England took the honors, finishing on top of the table while Cayne Matthews was runner-up.

On January 14 it was fantastic to see Knighton TFC holding a great tournament with 23 players and five teams. The team event consisted in a group of 5. Cardiff TFC finished on top while London Road SC was runner-up, Wolverhampton SFC was 3rd, Cardiff B was 4th and Knighton TFC took the 5th place. The individual tournament had a great turnout and Phil Dacey took the honors, defeating Brian Daley in the final. Sensation of the day was caused by Ruby Matthews. The young girl managed to reach the semi-finals after defeating Danny Bird in the quarter-finals. Darren Barnes was the other semi-finalist. To be noted the final matches were filmed by the Welsh TV channel for their Sgorio Mwy programme on S4C.

As for Knighton TFC, from Sunday 21st January Knighton Table Football Club/Trefyclo Clwb Peldroed Bwrdd is moving to the Plough Inn in Market Street/Heol Farchnad. Meetings start at 13.00 and finish at 16.15.

Casey van Os for the third time in Hoogezand

Last Saturday the Dutch club of GSV de Hyacinth was holding the 4th edition of the "COBEX Top of Holland Tournament" and for the third year in a row, the winner was Casey van Os.

Casey defeated Henk Landzaat (1-1 and 3-1 on shots) in a very exciting final while Nico Marks defeated Jacob Bijlstra in the game for the third place. It was a nice day of table football with 15 players of different ages between 9 and 69 years old.

For the first time there was a foreign player taking part, Stéphane Lambert from Belgium. It was nice to see old and new faces and hopefully this successful tournament will be positive for the revival of the game in the Netherlands, hopefully with more collaboration between Dutch players and WASPA.

Congratulations to Jacob Bijlstra and GSV de Hyacinth for a perfectly organized tournament.

Dave Brothers wins in Chopwell

A good morning in Chopwell, despite the snow.

First up was Dave 5-0 Stephen
Not a lot to say. Stephen gave it a go and was caught with some soft finishes.

Next Stephen 0-1 Nigel
Nigel just had the better of the game and was able to come up with the only goal . Both players made some good blocks, showed some good touches and both players had shots.

Finally Nigel 0-0Dave
Nigel had by far the better of the game and had several chances, while Dave never had a shot! Some great blocking from Nigel throughout the game and unlucky with some of his shots. If it was a boxing match, Nigel would have won easily on points.

Standings
1st  Dave
2nd Nigel
3rd  Stephen

WASPA report of December 2017

Dear friends, first of all, happy New Year. May all your dreams come true in 2018! I really hope Subbuteo will remain an important hobby in your life!

You will find enclosed the WASPA standings at the end of December.

Welcome to the German club of Kaiserau
December was a very busy month and it was exciting for everyone to see how many clubs wanted to run Christmas tournaments. In total, we had 33 regional tournaments, 4 promotions events, 2 events with the old rules and 1 with advanced rules. Two "test matches" have also been added in the records.

The clubs of Kaiserau (Germany) and Ebenfurth (Austria) have held their very first WASPA tournaments. Welcome to them!

Terrific turnout of 30 players in Kallithea, Greece
The rankings are growing. 40 players have attended their very first WASPA tournament and we now have 1602 players from 47 nations involved. We have "lost" Afghanistan in the ranking of nations. Their two representatives were living in Austria and had been involved in the Subbuteo circuit thanks to the help of Austrian players and hopefully they will be back in the future.

The ranking of "top clubs" is also very exciting to follow with Jurong Central SC, Flaming Flickers SC, Western Flickers TFC and
London Road Subbuteo Club struggling for the first place. We have a total of 22 "top clubs" in our records and hopefully we can get a few more in 2018.

Christmas time in Rochefort, Belgium
Belgium was the most active nation in December with 8 regional and 3 promotional tournaments and more than 100 individual entries, which means 25% of the total entries in December.

It was nice also to see action in Northern California and Connecticut in the US and amazing turnouts in all tournaments in Greece.

First tournament in Ebenfurth, Austria
Well, you can find the updated records in the attached two files (click links to open):
- the season results (PDF);
- the rankings and statistics (Excel).

Well, that's all for now. Please remember you only need 3 players to register your tournament. Don't be scared to join. It's free and tournament requests can be sent by e-mail to vincent.cop@rsca.com
